Guide To Tangle-Free Hair Extensions

Sylvia Watson

Hair extensions are a perfect way of giving your hair length and body, without having to wait months for it to grow.  One problem often encountered by new extension wearers is tangling.  You can prevent your new extensions from succumbing to the tangles by following these top tips!

Why do hair extensions tangle?

There are a few reasons why hair extensions become tangled including:

  • humidity and dampness
  • product build-up
  • using the wrong type of product
  • poor hair care regime
  • allowing the extensions to become very dry

In order to protect your investment and keep your extensions looking great, follow these anti-tangling care tips.

Use the correct brush. If you use a brush that is too harsh, you can risk encouraging tangles.  Ask your hairdresser for an ionic paddle brush.  This kind of brush helps to distribute the natural oils found in your scalp through your extensions, leaving them looking smooth, moisturised, and shiny. Brush your extensions twice each day to prevent matting and tangling, and hold the extensions as you brush to prevent placing undue strain on the bonds.

Night time care routine. Get into the habit of taking ten minutes at night before you go to bed to give your extensions some TLC.  Brush your hair so that the extensions are tangle-free, and then put them into a loose plait or a pony tail.  You could also try wearing a silk bonnet, which will keep your extensions silky-soft and tangle-free.

Use the right products! Hair extensions require specially formulated, sulphate-free shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks to keep them free from tangles and in super-soft shiny condition.  Your hairdresser will be able to provide you with a range of good-quality products for use on your extensions. When conditioning your hair focus on treating the mid-length and the ends.  Never use conditioner or hair masks on the bonds or taping of your extensions, as this can cause them to become loose.

Turn down the heat. You can help to keep your extensions moisturised and therefore less likely to tangle by reducing the amount of heat exposure from the use of curling tongs, hair straighteners, and blow drying.  If you are intending to use any of these things, always use a heat protection spray to shield your extensions from the drying effect of heat.

In conclusion

You can prevent your hair extensions from becoming tangled by keeping them well-moisturised and in good condition.  Follow the above tips and ask your hairdresser for more advice and information on keeping your hair extensions looking gorgeous!
